Checklist
Senior Companion Hiring Checklist
Everything to check before, during, and after hiring a companion for Mom or Dad — in one printable list.
Use this checklist to move from "we need help" to a trusted companion visiting every week.
1. Define the need
- List what a good week looks like for your parent
- Note services needed: visits, outings, errands, rides, meals, check-ins
- Decide a starting schedule (most families begin with 2 visits/week)
- Set a monthly budget using local hourly rates
2. Find candidates
- Search local companion providers in your parent''s city
- Shortlist 2–3 providers who serve the area and offer the right services
- Read how each provider describes screening, insurance, and references
3. Screen
- Ask the 15 screening questions (see our guide)
- Request references and actually call them
- Confirm insurance and screening policy
- Review the written service agreement
4. Trial
- Book a short introductory visit
- Watch for fit: listening, warmth, patience
- Ask your parent how it felt
5. Start well
- Agree on visit schedule and communication rhythm
- Share key information: routines, interests, emergency contacts
- Check in after the first two weeks and adjust
